you would either have to get a plane from helskinki with blue 1 to kitilla or you could get the train to kolari and then transfer from there
given it is just you and your young son I would suggest you have it all sorted for you especially as you want it for a short break - it%26#39;s not worth the hassle
you cna also get cheap flights with ryan air to tampare too and then get connectly flights north

Kittilä%26#39;s not easy to get to other than by air. You might consider Rovaniemi instead, which is accessible by a comfy overnight train.
Have you checked out Finnair for London-Helsinki-Kittilä? BA flies code share to Helsinki anyway.
If you take Ryanair to Tampere you can fly on to Kittilä with Finncom for as little as €69 during the period you want to travel. This could be a very cost-effective route. http://www.fc.fi/
As to whether Kittilä%26#39;s the place to go, that really depends on exactly what you want. Kittilä itself is a sleepy little village. Just to the north is the Levi skiing resort, which is where most tourists head. The resort offers skiing, reindeer and husky trekking, snowmobile rides and stuff like that.

For an independent Santa trip I would go to Rovaniemi where Santa is at his office in the Santa Claus Village every day of the year. However, Rovaniemi is a town and not so scenic as e.g. the ski resorts in Lapland are (e.g. Levi in Kittilä).
Check travel agents and airlines for a London-Helsinki-Rovaniemi (or Kittilä if that%26#39;s where you want to go) flight. This way the connecting domestic flights in Finland might be cheaper than if booked separately.
Helsinki - Rovaniemi is flown by Finnair (and in winter season probably also by Blue1 (SAS). The same companies fly also from Helsinki to Kittilä (at least in the skiing season). Many flights are code-share with other airlines, so you might find e.g. BA flight numbers for the domestic flights in Finland.
