I want to book a winter trip to Lapland and stay mainly close to Rovainemi or Muonio, but I want to do lots of activities, such as the Santa village, Northern Lights, Husky/reindeer sledding, Snowshoeing, ice-fishing, and even an overnight stay at the Ice Hotel in Sweden.
I was looking at using A-H Elämykset to book my vacation, but I am not familiar with them, and I was wondering if anyone has ever used them, and if so, could give me your thoughts/opinions. Also, if you have not, maybe you could recommend how I should go about booking this type of vacation.
I really want to see the Northern lights, so when would you suggest to go. I heard dec 15- Jan 31.
Thanks.

we have been to lapland 5 times and only seen the northern lights once, that was on new years eve in yllas - it is something that you can not guarantee but if it%26#39;s one of your top things then maybe you need to look into where they are seen the most and the frequency - I know that you need to be away from the lights so maybe rov is not the right place, not unless you can get out of the city, the other thing to look into is if they are seen more often the more north you go as I think this may be a deciding factor
why to you want to go to rov or muonio and have you thought of other places?

I really don%26#39;t care where we go, but I just know that these are the more popular places and I thought that there would be more activities. We will be traveling with our children, ages 8-10, and want to do all the activities listed as well as hopefully seeing the Northern Lights. I think they have some tours that take you more North and away from the lights of the city, but not sure where they go.
Where have you been when you go to Lapland? Are you always is ylla?

you will be able to do the whole santa thing in most resorts along with the the husky, reindeer, snowmobile trips etc - I have been to yllas 3 times, levi once and saariselka once, saariselka was by far my fav, it is way up north so there is no santa park but I think you should look into the santa park as there are reports of it being very tacky
from the uk we have lots of tour companies that do short santa breaks with all things included, these can be very expensive, the other option that we have over here is to go with one of the ski companies such as inghams - they go for a week and you can also book your activities via them too, they are very good and excellent value - I am not sure if you have the same sort of thing in Belgium but have a hunt about and then compair the prices from the UK tour ops as it may be much cheaper for you to get a flight over here and use one of our tour companies
if you want to stay or visit an ice hotel then maybe you need to think about going to swedish lapland, there is a company called activities abroad (there is a thread on here about them) as they seem to do a very good variety of packages that you may like - they are expensive though
if you like the look at saariselka then there is the ice place up there that you may like, it%26#39;s also got igloos you can stay in (glass ones)
what are your options from Belgium, do you have much choice? if not let us know and we can point you in the direction of UK tour operators
when do you want to go and I take it you can go for a week?
|||
also the whole flying over here option - you can get ryan air flights from eindoven to stansted very cheaply - you would tehn have to get across london etc down to gatwick but this maybe a cheap option for you

I honestly don%26#39;t care whether we go to Finnish or Swedish lapland, i just want to do the things listed if possible, and we would really love to see the Northern Lights.
We want to go for about a week, but it can be shorter or longer. We can go at different times. We just want to optimize our time to go during the best time to see the Northern Lights.
I have just been looking into tours online and some are really expensive. I would like to take a less touristic-route, but still do things that would be fun for kids.
I know on FinnAir we can fly straight from Brussels to Rovaneimi, but I haven%26#39;t checked other places.

I have heard that Saariselka is really nice. So maybe we should just go there, especially if they have an icehotel too. I kind of just wanted to get that whole experience. It doesn%26#39;t have to be in Sweden. For what reasons did you like Saariselka the best? How did it compare with the other places you have been?
Any ideas of how to go about booking a vacation in Saariselka? Where did you stay?

when we first went to lapland we went to yllas and it was truely magical, it was a small village spread out so there were lots of lovely walks through the woods, there was however not much in the way of shops etc and despite the fact that our trip was not a shopping trip it would have been nice to have a look about some little shops with local crafts etc - we then went to levi which was very different and very built up in comparison - i didn%26#39;t like that but what I did like was the shops and the resturants - it was nice to eat out every now and again
when we went to saariselka it was like a combination of levi and yllas - it%26#39;s bigger than yllas but more compact, it%26#39;s also set in more hilly areas so the vista was really nice, there were also a lot of trees thoughout the town, it has some really nice resturants and chic little shops etc - I absolutely loved it there, for me, it had everything - the ruralness and wildness that I like mixed with a bit of chic shopping and eating
the best way to go there for us in the uk is with inghams (www.inghams.co.uk) and look under their ski/snoboard section and then finnish lapland section - we stayed in one of the log cabins which was very rustic but fab - you can book all your activies via them too - if you go through the booking process with them you will then see the additional costs of the activies that you can also book so this will give you an idea of the cost
I have just priced it up for you to go on the 24th jan with flights, transfers and staying self catering in the 3 room log cabin - that cost is £1400 for all of you
the super reindeer is £130 for the 4 of you
the super husky is £230 for the 4 of you
snowmoble is about $130 for the 4 of you
so the activities are going to be about £500 that brings your total cost to £1900 then you have food ontop of that and any other trips that you want to do such as ice fishing etc
if you then want to go to the ice hotel and igloo then this is the place
kakslauttanen.fi/winter_kakslauttanen_specia…
it%26#39;s not far from saariselka and I believe there is a bus that will take you there - I don%26#39;t know how much it costs to stay there
the other thing about saariselka is that it has a taboggon run which is great fun and free
if you are thinking about going to lapland with inghams then they are doing a special offer at the mo - one thing to remember is that there is a 3 hour coach trip from the airport to the town but it%26#39;s well worth it, the other thing to remember is that in feb there are a lot of school holidays so it maybe best to miss this time if you can
hope this has helped you

That is alot of help. Thank you for letting me know all of that information. I am going to look at the websites right now.
Is there a some type of Santa village there too because our youngest daughter really wanted to go?
|||
there is no santa park but there are verious search for santa trips etc and you can also organise santa to come and see you etc - others will be along soon who can help you with the whole santa thing - it%26#39;s not really our cuppa tea so I don%26#39;t know much about it
|||
Out of curiousity, when have you gone there? Was it always in January or at the end of the month or did you go at different times? During which time, did you see the Northern lights?
We are probably going to have to go the week during Christmas or the February break that is the most expensive due to the holidays our children have from school. I would rather go at a different time, but I don%26#39;t really have alot of choice on the matter.
