Our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids, ages 8 and 10) are planning a visit into Lapland this year, but not sure where to go and when. Any suggestions? We really would like to see the Northern Lights, and we would like to go at the best time to see those. We are also interested in staying in an IceHotel or Ice Igloo for one night. And maybe see a Santa village...other things are snowshoeing, ice fishing, reindeer/husky sledding...
Not sure where would be the best place to do all of this or if we should travel from one to the other. Any suggestions? Also, would you suggest booking with a travel company (and if so, which one) or booking it on your own (if so, any suggestions)? Thanks for the help.

You need a clear sky for the northern lights and that is a matter of luck. Whether the could conditions and solar wind will favour you can%26#39;t be predicted. In other words, the aurora borealis is not something you can book. Think of it as a bonus.

cloud, not %26#39;could%26#39; conditions.

With kids 8%26amp;10 I%26#39;d go to Ylläs for the skiing and other activities you mentioned. Ylläs has two sides, one with a few hotels, clubs and such (younger people and couples like it better) and then the %26quot;family side%26quot; (äläslompolo), where you mainly have cabins that you can rent.
Our family has been there several times and seems we%26#39;re going to go there every winter from now on. I guess northern lites get the best chanses Jan-Feb timeframe when you have the highest propability for clear skies (high pressure fronts, and long night). But this may also mean very cold weather. We usually go late march, early april to get the best of weather (loads of snow and sunshine with reasonable temperatures).
There%26#39;s an Ice hotel between the Ski resorts of Ylläs and Ruka (at Kittilä).
For Santa, you%26#39;d have to go to Rovaniemi, which is a three hours drive from the abovementioned resorts. So you have two choices, fly to Rovaniemi, rent a car visit santa and head for the resort. Second option is to fly to Kittilä (closer to these resorts) and then do a daytrip to Rovaniemi.

If you just want to see Santa rather than actually go to a Santa village, there are places in the resort of Yllas that you can meet him. I think meeting him in Yllas is much better than going to Santa village, alot less people and more private time with the Big Man! You can also get a private visit to your cabin. I have not done this but I know there are people on here that have and they said that it was truly magical. I think it can be quite costly but I am sure someone will be along shortly that can give you more info on this.

Hi lofty123
We saw Santa at the Lapp Village
http://www.lappvillage.fi/en_index.html
I can%26#39;t remember the price now but I think it was about 8 euros. We got as long as we wanted with him and he was the %26quot;REAL%26quot; thing. He was that good I was convinced. There is also a restaurant, gift shop, husky and reindeer there and you also get to meet his elves. I would highly recommend it, my kids loved it.

hi tigger9,
Did you book the santa trip before you went or while you were there. It looks great the kids will love it.

Hi lofty
We booked it when we were there and we didn%26#39;t have any problems. You will love it there it is such a magical place.

Yeh we are looking forward to it and its a while away yet. Just deciding whether to book through a company or direct with the snow village now. were not to sure which would be better.
