Levi & Ruka in March

Hi, Can anyone tell me what its like in Levi %26amp; Ruka mid March? Had a fantastic holiday in Levi second week of Jan 09, so quiet %26amp; no queue%26#39;s!Thinking its obviously going to be busier in March in both resorts??Any info?

|||

Hi, been twice to Ruka in March, both times the place was very quiet - no queuing at all, the biggest queue we saw was on the Saturday in Vuosseli, less than 5 mins ! rest of the week it was empty. We never saw any queues on the Ruka village side !

In 2008 we went out on Sunday 16th march and this year we went Sunday march the 8th so we%26#39;re back less than a week ! We love Ruka and its a great place for a holiday.

Never been to Levi so cant comment.

|||

Thanks for that! We were so spoilt in Levi but ruka sounds great in March too! Any tips on where to stay close to slopes?

|||

In 2008 we stayed in Ruka Suites (43sqm). We%26#39;re a family of 2 ad %26amp; 2 kids (10 %26amp; 12). Ruka Suites is great ski in/out, right in the village, close to everything you might need. Alko shop %26amp; small supermarket on the lower ground floor along with other shops %26amp; a laudry room should you need it. Couldnt fault the apt, bright, clean, lovely views - the 43sqm do not have an oven - two bedrooms, one a decent size %26amp; the other was bunk beds in a very small room, I suppose what we would call a box room.

There is a hotel being built in Ruka Village at the moment,but certainly didnt spoil any of the times we were in the village, in fact there was no actual construction going on while we were there this year, maybe they were just doing internal work ? - it is a car free village so very safe if you have little ones. The building works I believe are due to continue for another while.

This year we stayed in the Maston Aitio Cabins (70sqm ones) and we just loved them ! They are truely ski in/out literally to your front door ! I am waiting for Tripadvisor to allow me to put my review up - everything was perfect. We were in cabin 2B which was approx 50metres to the childrens Masto slope from there you can connect to either the East or West Ruka slopes. There are 3 types of Cabins available, we went with Crystal and it was Type G that we were in. Two toilets, double shower, sauna, washing mch, dishwasher etc. Two bedrooms downstairs and one upstairs (very steep !!! but has a stair gate to prevent little ones climbing).

Skiing conditions were just perfect and ski school is great too

|||

Thanks so much for all that info %26amp; funny enough the Maston Aitio cabins are ones we%26#39;ve been looking at!! All sounds perfect %26amp; glad you all had a great time! We need to find out what its like early jan too, looking at w/c 03/01/10 although have heard that its a Russians favour this time so could be busy??

|||

Good choice on Maston Aitio ! Shout if you need any more info on them. I have heard the same about New Year being very very busy with a huge influx of Russians.......

Hi there, sorry to hi-jack the thread here, but we%26#39;re staying in the maston aitio cabins in two weeks, for the easter holidays, we%26#39;re a group of four. As its Easter i expect it%26#39;ll probly be busier than in March but the snowcover - entertainemt etc should be similar, but once we get back i promise to write a full review of the place and accomodation, and drop you a line on here also.

I%26#39;m really looking forward to it, as are the other three, we%26#39;ve got 3 skiing and 1 first time snowboarder. the four of us havnt been skiing together for over two years, so we%26#39;re looking to party pretty well! Not looking forward to the prices of food/booze over there, but we%26#39;ll worry about that when we get back - you gotta enjoy yourselves, right?

|||

lucky you going in two weeks, i am so jealous !!! what type of maston aitio cabins are you staying in ??? save yourself a bit of money and bring some food items with you, tea, coffee etc etc. have a great time.

|||

Thanks, cant wait! only 11 days away now!

We%26#39;re staying in the 60 2m ones, with no upstairs.. How did you find the location of the cabins? were the shops, pubs, lessons etc far away? We%26#39;ll be taking a few foodstuffs, but mainly i think we%26#39;re gonna stock up at the duty free big time on the way through, 5 euros for a beer? crazy!

|||

You%26#39;ve just turned me green with envy !!!! yes Ruka will be busier than when we were there 3 weeks ago, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll have a blast.

If you click on my name, then go to reviews you%26#39;ll see my review on Maston Aitio, everything should be the same except for the upstairs bedroom. They are really lovely. They are truely ski in/out, our cabin was approx 50 metres to the childrens Masto slope from which you can reach all areas. We are Intermediates %26amp; had private lessons so the meeting point was in the Ruka Village side, but most group lessons meet on the Vuosseli side - Ruka is divided into two sides the Easy East (Vuosseli) and the Wild West (Ruka Village). Looks like you%26#39;ve skied before so you%26#39;ll be able to ski to your lessons and not need the ski bus.

Vuosseli is walkable from the Cabin we were in - approx 15mins there....but kinda uphill on the way back so add a few mins ! eating in Vuosseli is somewhat limited, more choice of restaurants in Ruka village - our favourite spot was the Piste, you cant miss it, building in village centre with a big yellow P on it - lovely for food, and a great bar attached as well. I have to say though we were very disappointed with the Chinese Restaurant.

Eating %26amp; drinking out is expensive - so bring as much alchol as you think you%26#39;ll need and bring some of the essentials with you, we brought some frozen food with us. The %26#39;big%26#39; K supermarket (not the one under Ruka Suites) is very well stocked, they even have the Uncle Ben range of sauces, so maybe do one big shop there and top up from the spar in the village as you need to.

The ski school is fab, we had 3 instructors - Jarno, Mikko %26amp; Oko and they were lovely and had super english.

Now that I%26#39;ve typed all of this, I%26#39;m even more jealous.........

Thanks for the great information, I%26#39;ve just read your review, cant wait now! only 5 days to go!! yeah, we%26#39;ve skied before and are having 3 days of inmtermediate lessons to touch up on what i%26#39;ve forgot in 2 years, Me and my mate are also taking our skiblades for some fun!

Looks like our plan is to eat + drink in the cabin as much as we can and head out for the nightlife late on, that should help keep the costs down, Weather we can get on the plane or not with all the booze we need to buy might be an issue though! :)
