Got the airline tickets...

Well, after many visits tonorth Norway, Iceland and Greenland now is the turn of the Faroe Islands. We got the airline tickets for mid August. But... Have great difficulties in planning our 10 days stay there. We will rent a car. But where should we stay? which Islands? How should we devide our time? Are there any B%26amp;Bs? Which hotels? Should we book all accommodations in advance? How do we move from Island to Island?

Any advise will be highly appreciated!

We went to Faroe with our own car from UK a couple of years ago on our way to Iceland. Details of what we did are at:

As we only had a week we took the decision to stay in Tórshavn in rented accommodation and drive from there. Therefore I can%26#39;t really give any information about accommodation except to say that I think it is probably fairly limited and that advance booking is advisable.

Streymoy, Vágar, Eysturoy and Bordoy are now all linked by road and are easily reached by day trips from Tórshavn. Roads are generally good, although some of the minor roads are narrow and can be steep and winding in places. Traffic was generally very light, although the main road north from Tórshavn could be quite busy in morning and evening peaks.

Other islands have ferry services, although these can be disrupted by rough conditions. There are also helicopter services in some instances.

We loved Faroe and were lucky with the weather, but it can change very quickly and vary from one side of an island to the other.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. The information on your site gave me many directions. It is very helpful.

Could you give me some more information on the place you stayed in Torshavn? Name, phone, price? How did you find it?

And... how long a drive is it from Torshavn to all the other islands? Did staying in one location prove to be a good decision? Would you do it differently now that you know the islands better?

Thank you again for taking the time to answer me!

All our travel and accommodation for both Faroe and Iceland was arranged by Smyril, the ferry company, but we had specified the places we wanted. You may find it worthwhile contacting GreenGate Incoming at:

http://www.greengate.fo/

Following the links on that page to Accomodation %26gt; Summerhouses will show what they have available in self-catering in different places. We were in No 115, chosen partly for location but also because we had access to the family washing machine. We liked it there, end of a road with a view across a field.

In terms of driving times it may help to look at the bus schedules at:

http://www.ssl.fo/

From that you will see that Tórshavn to Klaksvik by bus is only about 1h 40m, so solid driving would be a bit faster, sightseeing a lot slower. I should have added in my earlier post that you can also drive onto Kunoy, but I suspect that the roads beyond Klaksvik become a bit more ‘exciting’. We didn’t go far beyond Klaksvik because the day we were there was wet and we went south to find better weather.

That link also gives ferry schedules.

If we went again I think we would stop in one place for most of the time, the extra driving is made up for by being able to be in one place without schlepping around. From Tórshavn it would also be easy enough to get across to Nólsoy and Sandoy for a day by ferry. However with more time than we had it would be worthwhile getting to Suduroy, and that would mean spending some time there. The northern islands might be a bit more difficult, and the risk of getting stuck somewhere by bad weather can be significant. Of course a lot depends on personal taste and what you want to do with your time.

There is a 1:100,000 atlas of Faroe which is well worth getting, details at:

Sorry for nor reacting earlier. I was away for a few days. You can%26#39;t even imagine how much you helped us! I now start to understand what Faroe Islands is about. I am off in a few days to Southern Italy. I hope that it will be Ok if I ask you for more assistance closer to our Faroe trip. Thanks again!

Try Suduroy, its the southern most island and much more %26#39;gentle%26#39; in profile that the northern lot of islands. If you get all the way down to Sumba you can look out into the Atlantic ocean and think next place Scotland!

The hills around Vagur are also really lovely allowing you to see both east and west coast at once! There is a ferry from Torshaven which is very good, it takes about 2 and a half hours. I know of at least two places you can get hotel accomadation in the island just can%26#39;t remember their names! sorry!

the weather isn%26#39;t always that great but its a lovely pplace! enjoy!!
