No direct daylight, just a bit of twilight around midday. It%26#39;s the corollary of the Lapland summer%26#39;s midnight sun - winter%26#39;s noon moon. There%26#39;s artificial lighting for the slopes.

the later in jan will be best if you want some daylight - it%26#39;s not like it%26#39;s pitch black - more like twilight and I believe the sun comes above the horizon around the 17th Jan so if you can go after than then you may see some rays
as for the weather - it can range dramatically especially from the village to the slopes, we had regular temps of -27 in the village last new year but it was a good 10 degrees warmer up at the slopes - the lake in the village keeps the temps down

Eh, well, the lake will be frozen just like everything else in Jan. But yes during the cold period, the coldest air tends to be in the lowest parts and higher up in the fells the temps tend to be a bit higher. However up on the fells it is also windier and the actual effective temps can be much lower.
Anyway be prepared that in Jan and Feb the temps usually are quite low, say between -20-30.

Hi Probert,
We went in New Year and the snow was deep, powdery and lovely. We are split skiers and boarders in our group and everyone said it was perfect.Yes its really cold and with wind chill we hit -27 one day(we were in Phya)but with the right layers as a spectator even I was warm enough. It really is different from the cold we get here. Its not that awfull damp in the bones feeling. As for the daylight,Ok its not technically daylight because of the position of sun, horizon etc etc but I was really suprised.I imagined again the dark we can get here when its pitch black and had visions of taking a torch everywhere but it really is bright. The snow increases brightness by about 80%.I would look out of the window having brekkie and could see all around.I shopped, took photos, wandered around and it was just a bit like a rainy day type grey/blueness.You will have a great time!!!!!!!xxx

Thank you very much for all your advice everyone.
Hopefully we will get our holiday booked soon :D

I was in Yllas last January for 7 days from the 24th. It snowed evey day of our stay and I only saw clear sky once on our last day. The temperatures varied between minus 2 and minus 12 degrees. The snow depths were roughly 20 or so inches in the village. However just bear in mind that this is no gaurantee that the snow depths or temperature will be the same when you go.
