A word of warning to anyone departing Finland via Helsinki Vantaa (HEL) airport. Large queues form at outbound immigration takining anything up to one and a half hours to complete. I passed through there Friday afternoon 25th Sept and it was an awful experience. Several long-haul Asian travellers actually missed their flights and people stood for so long in the line they became unwell. This is not a good advert for Helsinki, the airport or the image of Finland.

I wonder what happened there - I have usually been through the queue within 5 minutes.

Sorry to hear that. I do not know if it is was something that happened just once or more often for example due to some new arrangements. I am sure that they are doing everything to normalize the situationa asap. Helsinki Vantaa airport is constantly putting effort on serving customers smoothly. Furthermore, Finnair is putting a lot of emphasis on maintaing and developing connections to Asia.

There is some major renovation going on at Helsinki-Vantaa and this is causing problems all over the airport. However, I%26#39;ve flown to Asia from Helsinki six times in the past year (most recently a few days after you were there) and have never had to queue for more than a minute or two at passport control. What you encountered was an extraordinarily rare mishap.
All airports are busier at weekends. One needs to allow for this. Still, my recent departure was on a Sunday - another peak day for travel - and there was no queue at all at passport control.
It might be useful to other people who read this thread that only passengers bound for non-Schengen destinations need to go through passport control.
