Can someone advise if venturing outside of Helsinki is worthwhile? e.g. to Tallin - if so where/suggestions.
Is it best to drive/hire a car while in Helsinki?

Do NOT hire a car for getting around in Helsinki. A 3-day tourist ticket for city transport will cover all your needs with no parking hassles.
If you want to see more of Finland on your short visit, you might consider Porvoo. It takes an hour or so by bus.
Tallinn is very much worth a visit.
