One day in Helsinki

We are taking a cruise of the Baltics in July and docking at berth LHC, West Harbour (Lansisatama) on July 19 for only the day. Is the distance from the dock to the city%26#39;s centre walkable? Are there shuttles or taxi%26#39;s available from the dock if need be?

I went on the Helsinki tourism web site and there%26#39;s so much to see and so many suggestions. Being our first time, we%26#39;re not sure what is a must see for the time we have. We%26#39;re also travelling with another couple who only speak Italian, so unless there are guided tours in Italian, it%26#39;s not an option we can consider. Can anyone suggest some ideas? Any advice would certainly be welcomed.

Berth LHC is actually in Hernesaari, where most cruise ships dock. It is possible to walk to city center, but bus is more convenient. There is local bus no 16 (EUR 2,50)from harbour to city center. I believe all cruise companies arrange shuttle or sightseeing buses as well.

Depending on your interests, you could get off at Vuorimiehenkatu stop, walk up Korkeavuorenkatu, a nice shopping street with restaurants and independent shops, visit design museum, turn to Yrjönkatu and then to Erottajankatu, where design forum (a good design shop/showroom/cafe) is located. This walk is about 1 km.

Following Erottajankatu down the hill few hundred meters you will get to Esplanadi, where several design shops are located, Stockmann department store is on the other end of Esplanadi, Market square on the other end. From Market square there is a ferry (2,50 EUR) to Suomenlinna fortress.

Take a look at www.maps.google.com, you can write the place names on search engine and locate them easily.

www.visithelsinki.fi/In_English/Visitor.iw3 is a good source, to give exact suggestions pls tell more about your interests, ages etc. Are your interested in the main sights, museums, shopping, local food?

We like to visit museums, cultural centres, historical sites, and similar venues where we can learn about the people, lifestyles and traditions. Some shopping is also good and your suggestions are great. Thank you Tuuli so much to giving us directions; your expertise is very much appreciated. Any other suggestions on the dos and don%26#39;t while visiting your beautiful city are also welcomed.

You should definitely take the bus to the city centre. The walk from Länsisatama is not particularly attractive. You could of course take a taxi but there is really no need as the bus is just as fast and cheaper.

Is Hernesaari and Lansisatama the same port? According to what Tuuli said, Lansisatama sounds like a totally different area of the port. Do you have two ports where ships dock? I%26#39;m confused.

Länsisatama and Hernesaari are next to each other:

kartta.hel.fi/opas/main/…

On the map you can see Hernesaari, Länsi-Satama is on the western (left) side of the basin where you can see docks Munkkisaaren laituri and Jätkäsaarenlaituri.

Thank you for the clarification. We%26#39;ll create an itinerary from a tour guide booklet we discovered from one of the links Tuuli suggested. Any suggestions for restaurants - not so much geared to tourists but where the locals eat - around the market square area where we can eat well and not too expensive? We%26#39;d like to try local dishes. Thank you all for your help.

Well, around the Market Squrare, the restaurants are either geared to tourists and/or expensive.

Why not try igougo.com/entertainment-reviews-b68656-Hels… which is rather near to the cruise ships.

Wow, you guys are terrific! Thank you so much for all your help.

We visited the square along with the cathedral - but we were not very impressed. We attempted to visit the church in the rock but it was closed for services and could not get in. So, we ended up walking around. There was not very much to see for the period of time we were there. We did not visit the fortress - not enough time. Sorry we couldn%26#39;t be more helpful.
