Helsinki to Tallinn

Hi,

We are going to Finland for a week...we%26#39;re going to lapland for two days and then for the next three days we are in Helsinki.

I was planning to book a day trip to Tallinn by a ferry...is is worth it or will it be just a waste of money in doing what every tourist in Helsinki ends up doing? Or Is it worth spending a night at?

Please suggest...

Thanks,

Sharat

Tallinn is a very interesting city, and it´s quite a bit different from Helsinki. So if you don´t have too much to do in Helsinki, I would recommend at least a daytime trip to Tallinn. It only takes 1,5 hrs there, as you might know. Tallinn is a lot cheaper than Helsinki, so that would be a great place to do shopping. It also has a very beautiful old town that you cannot find in Helsinki. Even for me as a Finn Tallinn seems exotic, not boring at all!

Hi,

Can you please suggest me the cheapest way to go to Tallinn....I mean which ferry and what class one should opt for?

Is it cheaper to book on the internet or even at the window, its the same price?

Let me know...

Thanks..

Hei, sharat.

I think these are the cheapest ferries from Helsinki to Tallinn:

Eckeröline: one way, adult: 22 euro.

Linda Line Express: one way, adult: 16-32 euro depending on time of day.

Tallink Silja: one way, adult: 24-40 euro depending on time of day.

(A little warning: Tallinna old town may be full of finnish tourists.)

Book and pay in advance. Shipping companies will charge extra for paying the crossings in their own travel shops or in the check in.

Linda Line is often the cheapest and fastest (1.5 hours), but as their vessels are rather small catamarans, they cancel rather often due to weather conditions (wind and/or rough sea). The next fastest is Tallink (2 h) followed by Viking Line (2.5 hours) and then comes Eckerö Line (3.5 hours).

Tallinn is really a worthwile place to see. The image of the city is very different from e.g. Helsinki (an old Hanseatic town).

How are you planning to travel between Helsinki and %26quot;Lapland%26quot;. Two days for %26quot;Lapland%26quot; is very little, you%26#39;ll have time to see only one place quickly there. The total land area of Finnish Lapland is 100369.18 km², i.e. approximately the same as that of Hungary and Czech Republic together!

Unless you%26#39;ve already booked, forget Lapland - it%26#39;s a whole different trip from Helsinki - unless you just want a very superficial glimpse (the Santa Claus stuff, for instance).

A day trip to Tallinn is very much worth doing, inexpensive and simple. Linda Line and Viking were offering a good package recently, high speed (1½ hours) one way and leisurely 3-hour sailing in the other direction. It was available on Linda%26#39;s website. This is worth checking out.

Hi All,

Our family will be in Helsinki for 3 days in September this year. We are planning to have a day trip to Tallinn. I just can%26#39;t find the online booking for Tallink line.

Sorry for hijack this topic.

Should we get the day cruise tickets in Helsinki, or get them on-line?

Many thanks...

There are several ferry operators, all competing bitterly for business, so you could pick and choose the cheapest/most convenient on arrival. I%26#39;ve only very rarely had a problem getting a booking and I do this trip often (twice in the past week, for instance).

I prefer Viking in poor weather and Linda in good, balancing comfort with speed.

Thanks!

Would we get some local currency or Euro will be ok?

If we need to get some local currency, where we can get the best exchange rate?

:-)

What%26#39;s the difference (besides price) between the types of cabins on Tallink/Silja Line?

What is A-Class, B-Class, Promenade or C-Class?

We (family of 4: 2 adults/2kids) will be traveling via boat from Helsinki to Tallin to Stockholm and then back to helsinki.

Thanks.

Euros in Finland, Estonian crowns in Tallinn. Some of the convenient money exchange booths in Tallinn give a diabolical rate, so go to a bank if you can or at least check the rates before buying.
