Visit to Lapland Nov/Dec 2009 with elderely parent

Could anybody recommend accommodation in Lapland that would be suitable for a 74 years old who suffers with rheumatoid arthritis.

Its my mother%26#39;s dream to visit Lapland to see Father Xmas and travel on a sledge pulled by reindeers - I would now like to make this dream come true for her. I only have one chance to get this holiday right so I would be most grateful for any recommendations.

We went in January 2009 and both my parents came with us. My Dad was 75 whilst we were there and has had 3 hip replacements and cannot move very well. We stayed in the Villa Armas in Yllas and found them to be in a great location as well as being really lovely cabins. We booked all of our trips through Lapland Safari%26#39;s and they picked us up from the cabins and returned us there after each trip - they were great and nothing was too much trouble for them. You will have a fantastic time. Hope this helps and if you need to know anything else please ask.

Thanks very much for your reply.

Did you book your holiday through a UK travel agent if not how did you go about booking flights etc. With regard to your trips again did you book them before you arrived.

This is going to be such a special trip for my mum I just want to get it right.

We travelled with Crystal Ski but I know they are not doing Lapland this year. The other company to go with is Inghams. We travelled in January and booked all the trips when we arrived as it wasn%26#39;t busy. If you are travelling in December you may need to book the trips before you go as I know it is busier then. We were there for a week, not 1 of the Santa breaks as they are really expensive.

Sorry meant to say we booked our trips with Snow Fun Safari%26#39;s.

Hi

I have taken my parents out to Lapland twice now, and they really enjoyed it, we had a cabin on the Teerentie complex which is near the Poro and Santa%26#39;s house.

In December direct flights are available through Ski-Flights or Western Air

November fly into Helsinki then onto Kittila you will only have your hand luggage with you as the main luggage goes direct.

Trips yes Snow Fun Safaris are great, the reindeer farm I love is Sami%26#39;s lovely family and ask to pet Wille the reindeer.

You could also get Santa to visit the cabin.

1 Bed log cabins in Teerentie would be fine as you have a twin bedroom downstairs and a further 2 beds upstairs. Fully equiped kitchen, shower and Sauna.

Look on Yllaksen Matkailu site and you will be able to see what cabins are avaiable.

Kind regards

Jane

your best and probably easiest option is to go for a week with inghmas - stay out of the school hols and it will be reasonably prices

as for where to go there are lots of resorts, my fav is saariselka but it%26#39;s a 3 hour coach trip after the flight

levi is a small town with good amienties but a little built up for my liking

yllas is a spread out village with lovely log cabins - I prefer the log cabins over the villa armas not only due to location but also the cabins are too modern looking for me - also - when we stayed there we found thick ice on the floor of the car port which you had to go through to get to the front door

then there is salla which is a new resort to inghams - however - there is no supermarket there so if you are concidering that then look into it a bit more

then there is ruka - not been there myself but it%26#39;s had a good report, it%26#39;s a self contained place with everything at hand and the flights are to kussumo so the flight time is not so long at to the other resorts

no matter what resort you go to you will be able to do all the activities - you will find inghams cheaper than booking locally

I would suggest that the most important thing is ensuring that your mum has good boots, the paths etc in lapland are well kept however, if the weather gets warm and then cold again then there will be ice on the compact snow paths - these can be lethal so make sure you have got good boots for her - you can also buy spiky grips that attach to the bottom of your boots - tchibo were selling them last year

the other option is that when you are there you hire a kick sledge - you mum can sit on the seat whilst you push her around - it%26#39;s easy once you get the hang of it

I really hope you go as it really is magical but be mindful of the extremes in temps so pre is vital when it comes to clothing etc especially with your mum who%26#39;s circulation is not going to be as good as it used to be (if she%26#39;s anything like my mum)

good luck and let us know what you pick

Regarding flight times there%26#39;s not really much difference whether the flight is to Kittilä, Kuusamo, or Rovaniemi for that matter. You can also book the flights and accommodation separately. Finnair and Blue1 fly from Heathrow to Helsinki, Finnair also from Manchester and Finnair flights are code-share with BA (and BA flights to Helsinki are code-share with Finnair). On Finnair flights you%26#39;ll get a warm meal whereas BA only offers you a snack (if even that anymore). On Blue1 you must purchase food and drinks. All ski resorts have a central booking agency that you can contact for arranging the accommodation (in many places accommodation can be also booked online on their website). This may be worth a look as the tour operators have priced their holidays last spring when the exchange rate was at its lousiest...
