Hello! Hope everyone isn%26#39;t sleeping in this quiet forum...
I%26#39;m looking at a 2-2.5 week trip to Iceland and the Faroe Islands from Toronto, Canada..in July 2009.
I%26#39;m thinking of spending about 4 days in the Faroe Islands, but need some help planning that out.
The ferry operated by Smyril-line.com seems to have limited runs between Tórshavn and Seyðisfjörður, Iceland, which would require a routing of:
Iceland (Wed) -%26gt; Faroe (Thu), then Faroe (next Wed) -%26gt; Iceland (Thu) ... a total of 8 days.
Does anyone know of any other options besides flying that could shorten my timeframe by 1 oe 2 days? If flights are the only other option, any suggestions are appreciated.
Feel free to convince me that the 8-day roundtrip is worth it too ;)

You have it right, weekly Smyril ferry or fly.
Faroe is interesting and very different. But if possible try doing the islands early in your trip or they may seem a bit tame after Iceland.

Thanks Wasleys!
This will help confirm my plans. I%26#39;m happy to have some more %26quot;quiet%26quot;, relaxing time in the Faroes and just enjoy nature. But I%26#39;ll consider moving it up in my overall schedule....time to start planning dates.

Hello again.
I have figured out some schedules for my summer visit to the Faroe Islands, but could use some advice on the %26quot;getting around in the Faroe Islands%26quot; part. I planned to get the 7-day bus / ferry pass and camp almost every night.
My intentions would be something like:
- arrive in the islands
- get some supplies in torshavn and head west right away to Vagar and Miknes for 2 days.
- From Miknes, ferry and bus it up to Eysturoy. Hike some mountains, perhaps Slættaratindur. 2 days total.
Question - how long would it take to get to somewhere like Eiði or near Slættaratindur from Miknes?
Then, I%26#39;d like to head to Nordoy region, maybe Klaksvik one night and camping somewhere else one night. (Up to 6 days now). I am not totally certain what to do here for a hike / activity like birdwatching.
Then I would head back to Torshavn for a final night.
Now with this I would miss out on Sandoy (which looks to have some nice hikes) and Suduroy. Does it make sense to head %26quot;north%26quot; instead of %26#39;south%26quot;?
Some of the things I need to look into further are:
- hikes around remote, scenic inland lakes...seems Suduroy has nice ones...what about the north?
- visiting / hiking to abandoned villages and places inaccessible by road....not visited by the usual %26quot;ferry%26#39; crowd.
- Gjogv seems to be a popular spot, and looks quite scenic.
Overall I%26#39;d like to practice some photography skills, so am looking for nice scenic spots....
Thanks for any feedback on my plans. A proposed timeline is below.
June 25/26 Fly to Iceland
June 30 Fly to Faroe Islands
July8-9 Overnight Ferry back to Iceland
July 12 Fly Home

Have you found this web site?

Mykines is an island and getting to and from it by ferry or helicopter is weather dependent. Be warned you can get stranded there for several days if there are strong winds. If you are wanting to get here then you have to be prepared to have a flexible itinerary.
There is so much to do on the main islands that in your 7 days Suduroy probably isn%26#39;t practical.
If you go to Vogur do drive to Gásadalur. This has only recently been connected to the road network by tunnel and still retains it%26#39;s isolated feel.
Tourist information do a small booklet of hikes. Email them for a copy. There are lots of good walks along the old paths which predated the roads.
We spent a week in Faroe Islands with a car. It is a fantastic place - there is so much to see and the scenery is marvellous.

Hey Eleanor,
I%26#39;ve been thinking about your last post. I think my plan may be too aggressive, in terms of seeing too much in 8-days, especially as I had wanted to camp and take the bus/ferry around.
Heading to Mykines first is the plan for sure, in case weather does go bad and I need cut something out (of course if it%26#39;s bad right when I arrive...then I%26#39;ll have to go elsewhere to start)
Perhaps I%26#39;ll rent a car then to make it quicker for getting around %26#39;when%26#39; I want, instead of being tied to a schedule.
More planning this weekend. I%26#39;m still having a bit of a challenge getting prices for the Smyril line ferry, because I don%26#39;t want to go all the way to Denmark....
