3 days in the Faroes.....

Hi,

I plan to travel to Scandinavia in October this year. While reading, came across pictures %26amp; information about the Faroe Islands %26amp; would love to go there!

I plan to fly in from Denmark (Billund, maybe) around the 20th of October. I might have just 3 days in hand, before I fly out to Norway.

I was thinking of covering only land-linked islands like Streymoy, Eysturoy %26amp; Kalsoy....since the seas might be a little rough this time of the year %26amp; most ferries seem to have cancelled programmes or reduced their frequencies.

Since I have just 3 days, was planning to start with Torshavn, then the Tindholmur cliffs, Vestmanna cliffs (there may be no birds though :( , Eioi, Gjogv %26amp; Kalsoy. Will this get too hectic within this time frame?

Also, instead of staying in Torshavn, the idea of staying in Gjogv appealed to me more....is it a good idea to use it as a base %26amp; then get around? Lack of any facilities other than a place to stay is not a problem...

Will the weather at this time cause problems in getting around / walking / hiking? From what I know, it%26#39;s bound to be unpredictable any time of the year...all the same, if it is strictly not advisable to travel there at this time of the year, I%26#39;d rather come back some other time.

From the Faroes, are there flights to Oslo / any other place in Norway?

Would really appreciate any help %26amp; inputs. Thanks!

No Norway flights. See http://www.atlantic.fo/

Tórshavn is quite a good base for the islands you mention, especially with a car. Gjógv is out on a limb.

As you say weather is unpredictable. We went in late May and there was snow. I would imagine October, especially later, could be a bit iffy.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your response....I had lost all hopes of getting any reply in this forum! :)

Your website is great! Very informative! I definitely want to take a chance with the weather %26amp; go to the Faroes..... I think partly, what%26#39;s also drawing me to this place,is this very unpredictability!

I see that you travelled by car....considering that I do not have my own means of transport, how do you suggest that I get around? Would it be wise to hire a car or can I rely on public transport (seems to be really limited)?

I plan to stay in a B%26amp;B in Torshavn....would also not mind any home-stay. Do you have any leads on this? Also, do you know any local travel agent there, to whom I can write, to get car/hotel bookings done for the Faroes?

A lot of people seem to really appreciate Mykines....wasn%26#39;t planning to go there, since getting back from there, in bad weather, seems dicey. From what I read, you didn%26#39;t go there either..... any inputs, though?

Raji,

I was a bit slow in responding to your OP as I%26#39;m only just back from a long trip through Asia, and as you have noticed not many people get in this forum.

I can%26#39;t give much help with agents, but if you go to the External Links page in my site http://tinyurl.com/3wpw2m (which may well be out of date) you will find links to TIC and portals which may get you in touch with agents. Atlantic Airways may be able to help with a car, even a package maybe. The TIC will certainly be able to help.

Have you considered self-catering? That will give a lot of flexibility.

The bus service is not bad considering the population and geography but will be a bit limiting. If you can get a car that would be much better as you would have the chance to explore some of the quieter places at your own speed. You might also be able to %26#39;dodge%26#39; bad weather; going to the other side of an island can often give better conditions. Roads are good and very quiet.

Different people have different styles so the next comments may not apply to you. I would be inclined to have a more detailed look at some of the nooks and crannies of Streymoy rather than zooming all over the islands. My wife and I loved Faroe but we did find the landscape a bit repetitive. So what I%26#39;m saying is that you will have to go quite a long way (maybe involving ferries which might not be a good idea in case of bad weather leaving you stranded) to find major changes in scenery. The pictures in my site will give you an idea of what%26#39;s on offer.

I would avoid Mykines unless the weather is very settled. Apparently people do get stuck there! That was why we didn%26#39;t go, although my wife wanted to.

One last point as you%26#39;re posting from Bangalore. I don%26#39;t know if you have been as far north as Faroe before, but if you haven%26#39;t bear in mind that hours of daylight there in October will be less than you%26#39;re used to.

Michael,

Hope you had a great trip!

I did see the links on your page.....will go through to find travel agent links. Maybe, like you say, it makes sense to hire a car.

It does seem better if I concentrate on limited islands.....since I have just 3 days, I don%26#39;t want to be hopping from 1 place to another, in a mad rush to %26quot;see%26quot; places.......rather just relax in a couple of places %26amp; soak it up. Am trying to get at least 5 days in the Faroes.....things can be more relaxed then. I%26#39;m aware that daylight may not be as long as what I%26#39;m used to back home......will keep that in mind.

Can%26#39;t thank you enough for all your inputs!
