Sightseeing in Helsinki

Hello, I will be in Helsinki from 28 Aug - 31 Aug, I am considering getting the Helsinki card (55 euros for 3 days) so I can save on transport and the entrance fee for certain museums. Is this advisable? In addition, I have to make my way to Otakaari, Espoo on 1 Sep, should I go by bus or should I take the metro (I am travelling with 2 rather bulky and heavy pieces of baggage)? Thank you for your time.

Hi

First of all, Helsinki metro does not yet go to Otaniemi, so you will have to use bus to get to there (Otakaari, Helsinki University of Technology (although in reality it is in Espoo, but close enough)).

From Helsinki centrum (Kamppi to be more precise), bus numbers 102 and 103 go to Otaniemi. For finding out how to get from point A to point B in Helsinki/Espoo/Vantaa area with buses and trains, this is a great link http://www.ytv.fi/eng use the Journey Planner in it. Work also on your mobile phone.

As for getting the Helsinki card, it of course depends how much you are going to use public transport, and go to different museums and eat restaurants. ;) Note! Helsinki card is no good if you need to get to Otaniemi, because it is in Espoo. Helsinki card applies only to public transport inside Helsinki city limits.

Hope this kelps.

When I said that metro does not go to Otaniemi _yet_, the reason is that apparently they are going to extend the metro line so that it would go also there (and beyond) in the future. Currently metro goes up to Ruoholahti, which is still quite far away from Otaniemi.

Depends what you plan to visit. To me 55 € sounds quite a lot if you are not very much into museums. Helsinki centre is pretty walkable and the public transportaion does not cost a fortune anyways. See www.ytv.fi for different types of tickets.
